About this holiday
Victory Day commemorates the end of World War II in Europe. Most former Soviet countries observe it on 9 May, while Western Europe marks Victory in Europe Day on 8 May. Ceremonies honour veterans and the war dead with parades, wreath-laying and moments of silence.
