About this holiday
Eid al-Adha, the 'Festival of the Sacrifice', is the holier of the two main Islamic festivals. Observed on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah during the Hajj pilgrimage season, it commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Families who can afford it sacrifice an animal and share the meat with relatives and those in need. The Gregorian date moves about 11 days earlier each year.
