About this holiday
The Islamic New Year begins on the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is a public holiday in many Muslim-majority countries, generally observed quietly with prayers and reflection rather than festivities. The Gregorian date moves about 11 days earlier each year.
