Boxing Day on 26 December, the day after Christmas, is a public holiday in the United Kingdom and much of the Commonwealth. The name likely comes from the old custom of giving Christmas 'boxes' of money or gifts to tradespeople, servants and the poor. Today it is best known for family visits, major sporting fixtures and post-Christmas sales.
