Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is the final day before the Christian season of Lent. Known as Pancake Day in Britain and Ireland and as Mardi Gras ('Fat Tuesday') elsewhere, it is traditionally a day to use up rich foods, and in many countries it is the climax of Carnival.
